Stump grinding is the final step of a proper tree removal project. Properly grinding the stump is more important than some might think. It is important to thoroughly grind the entire stump separating the root ball from the existing root system. Also, before stump grinding can happen, it may need to be treated with herbicide to prevent shoots from sprouting off of the roots once the stump is ground (depending on the type of tree.)
Once the stump has been ground, excess debris should be hauled off and the area should be left just above grade allowing for settling over time.
If the customer is planning on replanting in the area where the stump was, they should consider removing the rest of the debris left in the hole and replace with a nutrient rich compactable soil. This will help prevent the grade from lowering over time and decrease the possibility of mushrooms forming in that area.
Arborists specialize in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and stump grinding and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.
